1915 Panama-Pacific Silver Round – $50 Octagonal Tribute

One of the most extraordinary designs in American numismatic history, honored in one full troy ounce of .999 fine silver.

The inaugural release in the Icons of Coinage Series pays tribute to the legendary 1915 Panama-Pacific $50 Octagonal—one of the most distinctive, ambitious, and coveted coins ever produced by the United States Mint.

Created for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco, the original $50 gold commemorative occupies a unique place in American coinage. Designed by celebrated American sculptor Robert Ingersoll Aitken, it was the first—and remains the only—octagonal coin officially issued by the United States Mint.

This magnificent Panama-Pacific silver round captures Aitken’s celebrated composition within an octagonal frame at the center of a substantial 39mm silver round. The obverse features Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, skill, and disciplined strength. She wears a crested helmet pushed back upon her head, symbolizing peaceful intentions rather than aggression. The Roman numeral date MCMXV appears upon her shield, while the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “FIFTY DOLLARS” preserve the character of the historic original.

The reverse depicts Minerva’s sacred owl perched upon a branch of ponderosa pine and surrounded by pinecones. The owl represents wisdom and watchfulness, while the octagonal border recalls the enormous private gold “slugs” associated with the California Gold Rush. The original inscriptions “PANAMA-PACIFIC EXPOSITION,” “SAN FRANCISCO,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM” complete the central tribute.

The surrounding field records essential information about this American numismatic masterpiece. The obverse identifies the 1915 Panama-Pacific $50 and its sculptor, Robert Aitken, while the reverse notes the remarkably small original distribution of only 645 pieces.

Struck in-house by Intaglio Mint from one full troy ounce of .999 fine silver, this 39mm round offers collectors an attainable tribute to an original coin that has become one of the greatest rarities in American numismatics.
