The Legend

The familiar origin story credits Ab Smith at Atlantic City Country Club: after hitting an approach close to the cup, he called it a “bird of a shot.” His group began using “birdie” for a hole played one under par. The name stuck. A century and change later, most amateurs see them about as often as they see a pileated woodpecker through a sunroof. Carry this marker, and maybe — maybe — the universe takes the hint.
