UFOs Over Rome – An Otherworldly Spectacle at the Colosseum

Rome has seen empires rise, crowds gather and centuries pass through its streets. UFOs Over Rome imagines a new spectacle above the Colosseum: a formation of flying saucers sharing the sky with one of the ancient world’s most recognizable buildings. This 1 troy ounce .999 fine silver round brings that improbable encounter into a detailed 39mm design.

The Arena Behind the Artwork

The Colosseum is also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, a name connecting it with the imperial dynasty responsible for its construction. Commissioned by Vespasian and completed under his son Titus in AD 80, it occupied ground previously used for the artificial lake of Nero’s Domus Aurea. A site associated with an emperor’s private complex became a monumental venue for public spectacle.

Its surviving tiers of arches remain an unmistakable emblem of Rome. The round uses that familiar profile to establish its setting immediately, then contrasts the ancient masonry with smooth, hovering craft. The building supplies historical depth; the saucers supply the imaginative surprise.

A View from Another World

On the obverse, multiple UFOs appear over the Colosseum, with larger craft and smaller distant forms giving the scene a sense of depth. The amphitheatre’s broken upper outline and repeated arches anchor the composition below. It is a fictional encounter, not a depiction of a documented event in Rome’s history.

That combination makes the design an engaging meeting point for interests that rarely share a display: Roman architecture, classic flying-saucer imagery and modern silver rounds. The scene can be enjoyed as a miniature story, leaving the viewer to imagine whether the visitors have come to observe the city or become its newest attraction.
