UFOs Over Paris – An Unexpected Arrival
Paris becomes the destination for visitors from beyond the familiar sky on this 1 troy ounce .999 fine silver round. Several UFOs appear above the city in a scene that trades an ordinary sightseeing trip for a science-fiction encounter. The design invites a simple question: what would the city look like through the eyes of an entirely different kind of traveler?
A City with a History of Looking Up
Paris has a real connection to extraordinary sights overhead. On November 21, 1783, Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and François Laurent, the marquis d’Arlandes, made the first untethered hot-air balloon flight with human passengers. Their journey used a balloon developed by the Montgolfier brothers, turning the long-imagined possibility of human flight into a public event.
The National Air and Space Museum records the enormous crowds that watched early balloons rise over Paris rooftops. Those flights also inspired prints and decorative objects, showing how quickly a remarkable event in the sky could become a subject for art and collecting. The UFO scene on this round is fictional, but its sense of aerial wonder has a fitting home in Paris.
Design Details
Obverse: Several UFOs hover over Paris, creating an imagined encounter between a famous earthly destination and mysterious airborne visitors. The city setting gives the fantastic subject an immediately recognizable theme without presenting the scene as a historical sighting.
Reverse: A high-relief Intaglio Mint logo is set against a radial burst and surrounded by a stippled border. The inscriptions include “ONE TROY OUNCE,” “.999 FINE SILVER,” and the year “2023.”
