The Four Seasons – Spring in Bloom

Spring opens Intaglio Mint’s Four Seasons series with a gentle image of renewal. Inspired by Edoardo Gioja’s seasonal art, this round of 2 troy ounces of .999 fine silver presents the season as a young woman gathering flowers. Its appeal is in the small signs of returning life: blossoms, insects and butterflies gathered within a 39 mm design.

From Painting to Silver

Italian artist Edoardo Gioja (1862–1937) worked in portraiture, landscape and decorative art. His Four Seasons appeared in The Studio in 1901. Italy’s ICCD preserves photographs of the seasonal paintings and drawings, providing a record of this part of his work.

The Language of Spring

Artists have long represented the seasons through human figures and identifying objects. The National Gallery of Victoria explains the traditional pairing of spring with flowers, summer with ripened wheat, autumn with grapes and winter with a source of warmth. Flowers make spring recognizable even without a landscape showing the time of year.

Here, that idea becomes a simple human gesture. The maiden gathers the fabric of her dress into a basket for flowers. The surrounding insects and butterflies suggest movement and a world becoming active again. Together these details give the design a light, expectant character that suits the beginning of the seasonal cycle.

Design Details

The obverse centers on the flower-gathering maiden, with insects and butterflies around her head. The scene translates a painted allegory into a small sculptural surface, inviting a closer look at the contrast between the figure, drapery and delicate natural details.

The reverse carries the large Intaglio Mint logo inside a plain border. “TWO TROY OUNCES” appears above and “.999 FINE SILVER” below, with stars on either side. Spring can be appreciated as an individual floral design or alongside the contrasting moods of the other Four Seasons rounds.
