The Story Behind the Badge

The familiar badge did not begin as a standard piece of state-issued equipment. The Texas State Library and Archives Commission describes nineteenth-century Ranger badges as star-and-circle designs made from Mexican coins and purchased by individual Rangers. Official badges were issued when the Rangers joined the new Texas Department of Public Safety in 1935.

The coin connection continued into the twentieth century. In a recollection preserved by the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum, retired Ranger Glenn Elliott described how a five-peso badge commissioned by G. W. Burks gained popularity among Rangers working in East Texas in the early 1960s. That account gives the design a particularly fitting place on a silver round: a coin became a badge, and the badge now inspires a collectible silver design.

Design Details

Obverse: An engraved five-pointed star carries “CO. A,” representing Company A, at its center. “TEXAS” appears above and “RANGERS” below, with oak-leaf decoration at either side. The weight and silver-purity inscriptions occupy the spaces between the star’s points.

Reverse: A design inspired by a Mexican 5 Peso piece depicts the Ring of the Serpents from the Aztec Piedra del Sol, or Sun Stone. “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS”—United Mexican States—surrounds the central image, with a dentil border completing the composition.
