Tetradrachm of Akragas Tribute – Two Eagles and Hare – 2 oz Silver

Two hunting eagles, a crab and a creature of Greek myth bring the ancient world to life in the Tetradrachm of Akragas Tribute. This ultra high relief piece contains two troy ounces of .999 fine silver in a compact 36mm format. Its rough edge and richly modeled designs echo the character of ancient coinage while offering the weight and finish of a modern silver collectible.

Art from Greek Sicily

Akragas, now Agrigento on Sicily’s southern coast, was a Greek city whose coins became a remarkable showcase for animal imagery. Eagles and crabs were recurring emblems of its coinage. By the late fifth century BC, engravers were turning these familiar subjects into increasingly elaborate scenes, combining closely observed wildlife with figures from mythology.

The ancient type honored here is commonly dated to around 414–413 BC. Its paired eagles convey movement and tension, while the crab and Skylla on the opposite side create a distinctly maritime composition. The two faces offer very different scenes, united by the imagination and detailed engraving associated with Akragas.

Obverse Design

Two eagles stand over a hare. One raises its head while the other bends toward their prey, creating a dramatic contrast between the birds’ poses. Layered feathers and extended wings give the group depth, and a border of dots surrounds the scene. The ultra high relief format emphasizes the overlapping forms.

Reverse Design

A crab with open claws occupies the upper portion of the design. Below it swims Skylla, also known as Scylla, a sea monster rendered with a woman’s upper body, a curling fish-like tail and the foreparts of dogs emerging at her waist. Her raised hand and streaming hair add movement to the composition, with Greek lettering around the design.
