The mask comes off, and the embrace takes on a different meaning. Trickery captures the moment when a reassuring appearance gives way to a concealed threat. Struck in 2 troy ounces of .999 fine silver, this T4 series round turns deception into a scene the viewer can read through three simple elements: Liberty, a mask and a dagger.
Reading the Allegory
Giving an idea a human form is a longstanding artistic device. The United States Capitol’s Statue of Freedom represents freedom as a robed woman, while its Spirit of Justice uses a female figure and a lamp to express truth and righteousness. Such works rely on recognizable figures and objects to make an abstract subject visible.
Trickery uses the same broad language of personification in a much darker way. Liberty stands for the ideal at risk, the mask for a misleading appearance, and the dagger for the intention behind it. The contrast between an embrace and a weapon creates the design’s tension without tying the scene to one named individual or event.
Obverse Design
Trickery embraces Liberty while removing his mask and holding it in his right hand. A dagger occupies his left. That division between the two hands lets the scene reveal both the disguise and the danger at once, making the unmasking the central action of the composition.
Reverse Design
The shared T4 reverse depicts Liberty’s face partly as cracked plaster and partly as skeleton. Knives, snakes and a rat skull surround her, with the blades naming “TREASON,” “TREACHERY,” “TRICKERY” and “TYRANNY.” The banner “POWER – CORRUPTION – LIES” appears above, and the hallmark follows the lower circumference. Together, the two sides connect one act of deception with the wider concerns of the series.
