Soldier of Fortune Cat – 2 Troy Ounce .999 Fine Silver Round

This is no ordinary house cat. Intaglio Mint’s Soldier of Fortune Cat takes a sinister-looking feline and dresses it for war, turning the familiar independence of a cat into a character with a much tougher assignment. Struck in two troy ounces of .999 fine silver, the round combines military-inspired fantasy with a deliberately mischievous sense of humor.

A Feline with an Attitude

The title gives the character its story: a wandering adventurer, self-reliant and ready for whatever comes next. Paired with a cat, that idea becomes an entertaining exaggeration of the animal’s watchful expression and famously independent personality. The result belongs to the world of imaginative character art rather than a portrait of a named historical soldier.

There is, however, a real connection between cats and military life. Cats traveled aboard ships as companions and rodent catchers, and wartime photographs preserve them as part of everyday life at sea. The Australian War Memorial’s collection includes a ship’s cat resting aboard HMAS Kanimbla around 1941—a quieter kind of service than this round’s formidable feline suggests.

That contrast is part of the appeal. Where real shipboard cats offered practical help and companionship, this design promotes the cat to the leading role. Its stern character makes the piece a distinctive choice for collectors who enjoy animal themes with an unexpected twist.

Obverse Design

A sinister-looking feline dressed for war dominates the obverse. The character is the focus, bringing together an animal portrait and the theatrical attitude suggested by the Soldier of Fortune name.

Reverse Design

A large Intaglio Mint logo occupies the center. The surrounding plain border reads “TWO TROY OUNCES” above and “.999 FINE SILVER,” with stars flanking the wording.
