Sitting Bull – 2 Troy Ounces .999 Fine Silver Round
Honor a leader whose influence reached beyond the battlefield with Sitting Bull from the Wild West Legends Series. This substantial two-ounce silver round presents his portrait in a 39mm format, bringing a familiar name into focus through the history of the Hunkpapa Lakota people.
A Leader of the Northern Plains
Sitting Bull, also known as Tatanka Iyotanka, was a Hunkpapa Lakota leader whose authority included both political and spiritual responsibilities. He opposed the loss of his people’s freedom to live on the Plains and became a central figure among Lakota communities resisting reservation confinement.
His association with the Battle of the Little Bighorn in June 1876 is often reduced to a battlefield command. The National Park Service makes an important distinction: Sitting Bull did not take part in the combat. His spiritual leadership and the community gathered around him were central to the wider story, while other warriors fought the battle.
After years of resistance and refuge in Canada, he returned to the United States in 1881. In 1885 he traveled with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show, an extraordinary turn for a man already famous on both sides of the Atlantic. He was killed during an attempted arrest at Standing Rock in December 1890.
Obverse Design
The obverse presents Sitting Bull’s profile, with braids and clothing rendered in silver relief. The portrait gives this historical tribute its quiet center: a recognizable individual whose story deserves more than the broad label of frontier legend.
Reverse Design
The Wild West Legends reverse features a longhorn skull, crossed rifles, and decorative Western elements. This shared composition ties the round to the wider series while the obverse gives it a distinct historical subject.
