A Remarkable Bill and a Life in the Trees
The toucan’s oversized bill looks heavy, but its construction is surprisingly light. A network of bony supports strengthens the interior, while keratin—the material found in human fingernails—forms its covering. That combination lets the bird reach fruit on slender branches without carrying the weight its appearance might suggest.
Fruit supplies much of a toucan’s diet, although insects and other animal foods also appear on the menu. Toucans are vocal, social birds whose calls can sound like croaks, barks, or growls rather than the musical songs people often associate with tropical birds.
Tree cavities provide nesting shelter. Both parents help incubate the eggs and care for chicks that hatch with bare skin and closed eyes. Even resting involves an ingenious adjustment: a toucan can turn its bill back beneath a wing and fold its tail upward, making a compact bundle that fits inside its roost.
