Alphonse Capone – 1 oz Silver Round – Public Enemy #1
The fedora, cigar, and familiar grin evoke one of the most notorious figures of Prohibition-era Chicago. Intaglio Mint’s Alphonse Capone round presents that recognizable portrait and a detailed Chicago street scene in 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver, part of the Public Enemy #1 series.
Chicago, Prohibition, and the Tax Case
Al Capone rose to prominence in Chicago during the 1920s, when illegal liquor profits and violent rivalries transformed organized crime. His name became a shorthand for the era’s gangland power, but the case that ultimately sent him to federal prison centered on income taxes.
In 1931, Capone was convicted of tax evasion and sentenced to eleven years in prison. The distinction matters: the tax investigation, Prohibition enforcement, and other inquiries involved different federal agencies. The famous story of Eliot Ness and the Untouchables is only part of that wider effort.
Capone later became one of Alcatraz’s best-known inmates. After his release, he lived in Florida, where he died on January 25, 1947. His enduring public image remains closely tied to the contrast between an outwardly polished appearance and the violence of the criminal world he occupied.
Obverse Design
Capone appears in a suit and fedora with a cigar and broad smile. His reproduced signature fills the lower-right field, while “PUBLIC ENEMY #1” follows the upper rim. The portrait captures the carefully cultivated image that made him recognizable far beyond Chicago.
Reverse Design
A period gangster holds a Thompson submachine gun before the Chicago Theatre. Architectural detail and the figure’s clothing establish the setting without presenting the unnamed reverse figure as a specific historical person. The hallmark detail below identifies the one-ounce silver edition.
