Alphonse Capone – 2 oz Silver Round
A smiling portrait in a fedora gives way to a shadowier Chicago scene on the reverse. This Public Enemy #1 release presents Alphonse Capone in 2 troy ounces of .999 fine silver, combining recognizable historical imagery with the substantial feel of a 39mm round.
The Gangster Behind the Public Image
Capone became a defining figure of Prohibition-era Chicago, where illegal liquor profits supported powerful criminal organizations and violent rivalries. His carefully presented public persona contrasted with the intimidation and bloodshed associated with that world.
The federal case that ended his reign centered on tax evasion. Convicted in 1931, he received an eleven-year prison sentence and later served time at Alcatraz. Although Eliot Ness and the Untouchables loom large in popular accounts, the tax case and Prohibition enforcement involved distinct investigations and agencies. The story is broader than a single lawman’s pursuit.
After his release, Capone lived in Florida until his death on January 25, 1947. His name remained embedded in American popular culture, making the portrait, clothing, and city setting on this round immediately evocative of the period.
Obverse Design
Capone wears a suit and fedora, with a cigar and familiar grin. His reproduced signature occupies the lower-right field, beneath the “PUBLIC ENEMY #1” inscription that curves across the upper rim.
Reverse Design
A period gangster holds a Thompson submachine gun in front of the Chicago Theatre. The theater’s architecture and sign establish a distinctly Chicago setting, while the figure and clothing extend the historical atmosphere of the portrait side.
