Abraham Lincoln – 2 oz Silver Round

Intaglio Mint’s Abraham Lincoln silver round honors a president whose leadership and words helped shape the nation through the Civil War. A detailed high-relief portrait is paired with a commanding heraldic eagle, bringing two familiar expressions of American identity together in 2 troy ounces of .999 fine silver. The 39mm diameter and approximately 6mm thickness give this Brilliant Uncirculated medal a substantial presence in the hand.

Leadership in a Divided Nation

Lincoln’s presidency is closely associated with preserving the Union and advancing emancipation. On January 1, 1863, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring freedom for enslaved people in designated areas still in rebellion. Its reach was limited: it did not abolish slavery everywhere in the country, and its enforcement depended on Union military success. Nevertheless, it transformed the war’s purpose and opened the Union Army and Navy to Black enlistment.

Later that year, Lincoln traveled to Gettysburg for the dedication of a cemetery for Union soldiers killed in the battle. His address connected their sacrifice to the principles of equality and representative government. The enduring power of those ideas helps explain why Lincoln’s likeness remains such a recognizable subject in American coins, medals and commemorative art.

Obverse Design

A high-relief bust of Lincoln faces right, with carefully defined hair, beard and coat. “IN GOD WE TRUST” curves across the upper field, while “LIBERTY” appears to the left of the portrait. The uncluttered background directs attention to the sculpted face and the contrast between raised detail and open silver surfaces.

Reverse Design

A heraldic eagle spreads its wings above a rocky base, with a shield across its body, an olive branch and a group of arrows. A flowing ribbon held in the eagle’s beak weaves through the composition. Layered feathers, the shield and sweeping banner give the reverse a richly textured counterpart to Lincoln’s portrait.
