Washington Bill of Rights – 2 oz Silver Round
George Washington’s portrait and the text of the Second Amendment share the broad faces of this 2 troy ounce .999 fine silver round. The 50mm format gives the portrait, radiating lines and engraved scroll a generous canvas, bringing two documents from the nation’s early years into a single commemorative design.
Two Moments in the Founding Era
The Bill of Rights became the Constitution’s first ten amendments on December 15, 1791. Congress had proposed twelve amendments in September 1789; ten secured the necessary state ratifications to take effect together. The date on this round recalls that milestone, while the reverse focuses on the Second Amendment.
The wording around Washington’s portrait draws from his First Annual Address to Congress on January 8, 1790. In that address, Washington linked being armed with discipline, organization and the ability to obtain essential military supplies. The design places that statement beside the later amendment, connecting Washington’s presidency with the constitutional debates of the early republic.
Obverse Design
A left-facing bust of Washington stands against a radial burst. The surrounding inscription reads “A FREE PEOPLE OUGHT NOT ONLY BE ARMED, BUT DISCIPLINED,” with “GEORGE WASHINGTON” below and stars separating the inscriptions. The portrait’s smooth surfaces contrast with the fine rays extending toward the rim.
Reverse Design
The Second Amendment appears in recessed calligraphy on a scroll, with “2 Troy Ounces .999 Fine Silver” on its lower roll. A radial burst echoes the obverse. “BILL OF RIGHTS” crowns the design, and “DECEMBER 15, 1791” anchors it below. Ten stars, five on each side, represent the first ten amendments. Crossed firearms appear beneath the scroll as part of the commemorative artwork.
