Liberty – Mint Club #5: An American Ideal in Silver
Liberty is both a personal freedom and a public promise. Mint Club #5 gives that ideal a familiar face: the Statue of Liberty, framed by stars and ornament on a round containing 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver. The design places a monumental symbol into a format made for close examination, with a stated total mintage of 500.
The Monument Behind the Design
Officially dedicated on October 28, 1886, the Statue of Liberty arrived in New York after an extraordinary journey. Completed in France, it was disassembled for shipment across the Atlantic and then rebuilt on its American pedestal. Its formal name, Liberty Enlightening the World, expresses an ambition that extends beyond a single harbor.
The monument’s symbolism rewards a second look. Its tablet carries July 4, 1776 in Roman numerals, connecting the figure to the Declaration of Independence. At its feet lie chains and a broken shackle, details difficult to see from ground level. These belong to the full-size statue’s story and give added meaning to the figure celebrated on this round.
Design Details
Obverse: The Statue of Liberty appears beneath “LIBERTY,” with five stars on each side and a decorative surround. The balanced arrangement gives the national symbol a medallic setting.
Reverse: An eagle spreads its wings below a crown and holds a flowing ribbon in its talons, against a circular diamond-patterned background. “500 Total Mintage,” the LIMITED MINTAGE™ and MINT CLUB™ inscriptions, and the outer weight and purity hallmarks identify the issue. Rounded dentils finish the border.
