Lincoln Cent Tribute – The Wheat Cent in Fine Silver
Few American coin designs are as familiar as Lincoln’s right-facing portrait and the paired wheat ears of the early Lincoln cent. This 2 troy ounce .999 fine silver tribute from Intaglio Mint brings that pocket-change classic into a larger 39 mm format, preserving its recognizable arrangement while replacing the cent denomination with the round’s silver weight.
A Centennial Portrait
The Lincoln cent debuted in 1909, the hundredth anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. Sculptor and medalist Victor David Brenner created the portrait and the original wheat-ear reverse. The wheat design remained in use through 1958, giving generations of Americans a small, everyday connection to the sixteenth president.
Brenner’s initials became part of the coin’s collecting story almost immediately. Their prominence on the original reverse drew criticism, and they were removed later in 1909. They returned in a less conspicuous position beneath Lincoln’s shoulder in 1918. The episode is a reminder that even the smallest details of a coin can become lasting points of interest.
A Classic Arrangement Revisited
The wheat ears frame a clear central inscription, balancing the portrait on the opposite side. On this modern tribute, “TWO OUNCES” takes the place of the familiar denomination. The design connects the visual language of the historic cent with the weight and purity of a contemporary silver round.
Obverse Design
Abraham Lincoln faces right beneath “IN GOD WE TRUST.” “LIBERTY” appears to the left, with the date and mint-mark detail to the right.
Reverse Design
“E PLURIBUS UNUM” arches above two wheat stalks enclosing “TWO OUNCES.” “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” appears below, with the hallmark along the lower circumference.
