A Presidency That Shaped the Nation
Lincoln led the United States through the Civil War, with preservation of the Union at the center of his presidency. On January 1, 1863, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring enslaved people in designated areas in rebellion to be free. Its reach was limited, but it made emancipation a central purpose of the Union war effort.
Later that year, on November 19, Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address at the dedication of the soldiers’ cemetery. In a brief speech, he connected the sacrifices of the war to the nation’s founding ideals of equality and representative government. Obverse Design
A detailed, high relief bust of Lincoln faces right, with his beard, hair and coat carefully modeled against the reflective proof field. “IN GOD WE TRUST” arches above the portrait, while “LIBERTY” appears at the left. The contrast between the portrait and the surrounding field gives the familiar likeness a sculptural presence.
Reverse Design
A heraldic eagle spreads its wings above a rocky base, accompanied by a shield, olive branch and three arrows.
