Remembering Time, Seizing the Day

Memento mori means “remember that you must die.” In art, reminders of mortality can also encourage reflection on how life is spent. Skulls and timepieces appear together in the European vanitas tradition, where ordinary objects become signs of life’s brevity. The connection was made tangible in skull-shaped watches: the very act of checking the time brought a reminder of mortality into the owner’s hand.

The reverse answers that warning with carpe diem, commonly translated as “seize the day.” The phrase appears in Book I, Ode 11 of the Roman poet Horace’s Odes. Addressing Leuconoe, Horace urges her to stop trying to predict the future and to value the present as time slips away. Together, the round’s two inscriptions offer a thoughtful pairing: an awareness that time is limited, and an invitation to use it well.

Obverse Design

A large frontal skull anchors an elaborate ornamental frame beneath “MEMENTO” and above “MORI.” Smaller skulls, a crowned winged skull, an hourglass, candle, dice, snail and flower fill the surrounding design. These details invite close inspection, setting the central skull among images of time, chance and the natural world.

Reverse Design

A draped skeleton rides a rearing horse and raises a chain-linked spiked flail. Flowing fabric and the horse’s movement give the scene a strong sense of motion, contrasting with the still, frontal skull on the obverse. “CARPE” and “DIEM” frame the rider, with small separators completing the circular inscription.
