The Story Behind the Sand Circles

Male white-spotted pufferfish, Torquigener albomaculosus, build circular nests to attract females. A fish only about 10 centimeters long can shape a structure roughly two meters across. Working with its fins and body, it repeatedly moves through the sand, gradually producing a ring of radiating ridges and valleys around a central nesting area.

Researchers documented this behavior in Japanese waters and reported its reproductive role in 2013. These circles are more than decoration: their shape helps gather fine sand at the center, where spawning takes place. Males also arrange shell and coral fragments on the outer ridges. The result is a striking combination of courtship display, nest building and patterned construction.

Obverse Design

The puffer fish appears close to the sandy bottom, surrounded by flowing aquatic plants and textured seabed detail. Its rounded face, prominent eye and small fins give the scene its character. The inscription “JAPANESE PUFFER FISH” follows the upper rim, identifying the animal behind the design.

Reverse Design

The reverse shifts to a view from above, filling the medal with the radiating pattern of the finished sand sculpture. Ridges converge toward the center, with the little fish included near the middle.
