Molon Labe – 1 Troy Ounce Silver Bar

Our iconic Molon Labe Type I design takes on a different format in this 1 troy ounce .999 fine silver bar. A textured background gives the familiar theme a distinct setting, while the opposite face carries the Intaglio Mint logo and hallmark. The result connects a compact bullion format with one of antiquity’s best-known expressions of resolve.

The Words Behind the Design

Molon labe is commonly translated as “Come and take them.” In the sayings of Spartan leaders preserved by Plutarch, the words are attributed to King Leonidas as his reply when Xerxes demanded the surrender of his arms. It is a famously brief response, conveying defiance without a long speech.

The phrase belongs to the remembered world of Thermopylae, where Leonidas and a Greek force confronted the Persian invasion in 480 BCE. Plutarch’s account preserves a later literary tradition about the Spartan king, rather than a transcript made at the battle. That distinction is part of appreciating the saying as both an ancient story and an enduring cultural image.

Few Words, Lasting Impact

The appeal of the phrase rests in its economy. A demand is answered with a challenge, leaving the rest unsaid. On a bullion design, that compressed message suits the medium: a small object can carry a much larger story about courage, determination and resistance.

This bar presents the established Type I artwork against a textured field, offering collectors another way to enjoy the design beyond its round format. The smooth edge and Brilliant Uncirculated finish complete the presentation without distracting from the central theme.
