Heracles – Greek Mythology 2 Troy Ounce Silver Round
The lion skin and club tell the story before the name is read. Heracles, the mighty hero known to the Romans as Hercules, appears on this Intaglio Mint round with the attributes that made him recognizable throughout the ancient world. Two troy ounces of .999 fine silver brings the legendary figure into the Greek Mythology collection.
Strength Tested by the Twelve Labors
In Greek tradition, Heracles was the son of Zeus and the mortal Alcmene. His extraordinary strength did not spare him suffering, and the tasks imposed by King Eurystheus became the defining cycle of his legend. The Twelve Labors sent him against formidable creatures and seemingly impossible challenges.
The Nemean lion gave him his most familiar emblem. According to the myth, ordinary weapons could not pierce its hide, so Heracles overcame it through strength and wore its skin afterward. The lion’s head and pelt became a kind of visual signature, often accompanied by his heavy club.
Ancient artists portrayed the hero in battle, at rest, and in moments of triumph. His appeal came from that combination of immense power and difficult experience: the labors demanded endurance as well as force. This round concentrates the story into a portrait whose lion-skin headdress and club immediately recall those trials.
Obverse Design
Heracles is shown from the waist up wearing the lion’s head and carrying a club in his left hand. Mountains occupy the foreground and background, creating a rugged setting around the figure. “HERACLES” appears at six o’clock.
Reverse Design
A Greek architectural dome frames “GREEK MYTHOLOGY” across the ceiling area, with pillars and their base surrounding the scene. The hallmark runs along the lower circumference.
