Hermes – Greek Mythology 1 Troy Ounce Silver Round
Winged feet and a herald’s wand identify a god whose work carried him across boundaries. Hermes brings the messenger of the Greek gods to a 1 troy ounce .999 fine silver round, with clouds and mountains framing his figure. The design celebrates movement, communication and the quick intelligence traditionally associated with this versatile Olympian.
The Messenger and the Traveler
Hermes served as the messenger of Zeus, protected travelers and guided the souls of the dead to the underworld. His roles linked journeys through the living world with passage beyond it. Trade and herds also belonged to his sphere, giving him a place in practical everyday concerns as well as divine adventures.
Ancient artists made those roles visible through a recognizable set of attributes. A Classical Greek oil flask in the Metropolitan Museum of Art shows Hermes moving swiftly in traveling clothes, winged sandals and a broad-brimmed hat. He carries the kerykeion, the herald’s staff traditionally topped by intertwined snakes. Other works show him with a purse to emphasize commerce, demonstrating how a change of accessory could highlight a different part of his identity.
Obverse Design
Hermes holds a herald’s wand in his right hand, with wings at his feet and clouds and mountains behind him. “HERMES” appears near the one o’clock position. The landscape and winged feet suit a deity associated with travel, while the wand marks his authority as a messenger.
Reverse Design
A Greek architectural dome framed by pillars and a base carries “GREEK MYTHOLOGY” across its ceiling. The hallmark follows the lower circumference. This shared reverse gives the individual god a place within the larger collection and offers a structured counterpart to the open landscape on the obverse.
