Château de Blain – 1 AVDP Oz .999 Fine Copper Round | Gargoyles of the World Series

Discover the eccentric artistry of France’s medieval fortifications with the Château de Blain copper round, the fourth entry in our Gargoyles of the World Series. Nestled in the Loire-Atlantique region, the Château de Blain is home to some of the most whimsical and peculiar gargoyles in Europe.

Struck in .999 fine copper, this 1 oz AVDP round measures 39mm and features a vivid depiction of the château’s infamous tongue-wagging gargoyle, captured in a playful and exaggerated pose. Its bulging eyes, protruding tongue, and expressive hands showcase the expressive possibilities of architectural stone carving. The reverse continues the series’ signature design — an ornate gothic window motif framing the Gargoyles of the World title, crowned by a winged guardian.

The Legend

The Château de Blain, also known as the Château de la Groulais, reflects successive periods of building, conflict, and restoration. Its surviving architecture cannot be reduced to a single construction date, nor does the age of a fortress establish the age of every carving. On this round, the creature’s exaggerated expression captures the playful side of the architectural grotesque, contrasting with the strong lines of the castle setting.

A delightful collectible for those intrigued by the whimsical and satirical elements of medieval architecture.
