Dragon Bridge Gargoyle Type VI – 1 Troy Ounce Silver Round
Explore the Gargoyles of the World collection

LOCATION: DRAGON BRIDGE, Ljubljana, Slovenia
A dragon watches over the Ljubljanica River, turning an everyday crossing into a memorable landmark. Intaglio Mint’s Dragon Bridge Type VI round features one of Ljubljana’s famous sculpted guardians with the city behind it, combining architectural history and fantastic imagery in one troy ounce of .999 fine silver.
A City Recognized by Its Dragons
Built in 1900–1901, Dragon Bridge was Ljubljana’s first reinforced-concrete structure. It belonged to a period of architectural change shaped by the Vienna Secession, the regional expression of Art Nouveau. The bridge’s modern engineering and elaborate decoration made it a distinctive addition to the city.
Four prominent dragon figures stand at its corners. Their identity was not inevitable: early plans envisaged winged lions instead. The dragons ultimately became inseparable from the crossing and from Ljubljana itself, whose coat of arms also features a dragon.
Although included in the Gargoyles of the World collection, the bridge creature is a decorative dragon statue rather than a medieval cathedral waterspout. That variety is part of the series’ appeal: fantastic creatures appear on civic structures as well as churches, taking on identities shaped by the places around them.
Obverse Design
The obverse depicts a dragon perched on Dragon Bridge in Ljubljana, Slovenia, with the city in the background. The creature dominates the foreground while its surroundings establish the real location behind the fantasy-like subject.
Reverse Design
The collection’s common reverse places “GARGOYLES OF THE WORLD” inside a ring of Gothic window frames. A small gargoyle perches on the “O” in “GARGOYLES,” and the hallmark appears at six o’clock along the outer circumference.
