Memento Mori – 1/2 Troy Oz .999 Fine Silver Round
Dark, elegant and thought-provoking, the Memento Mori silver round turns a familiar reminder of mortality into a compact work of bullion art. A skull, floral scrollwork and the words “MEMENTO MORI” share the obverse, giving this half-troy-ounce .999 fine silver piece a message that extends beyond its striking appearance.
A Reminder to Value Time
Memento mori is Latin for a reminder that we must die. In art, the skull has long served as a direct expression of that idea, encouraging reflection on the brevity of life. The message can be sober without being hopeless: awareness of an ending can sharpen our appreciation of the time before it.
Historical examples appear in objects meant to be held, worn or used. The Metropolitan Museum of Art preserves a rosary bead that joins youthful lovers with a death’s head, setting vitality beside mortality. Its collection also includes a skull-shaped watch by Isaac Penard, where the act of reading the time becomes a reminder of its passing.
This modern silver round continues that conversation through a portable object. Its ornamental flowers and unmistakable skull bring beauty and impermanence into the same design, inviting the owner to decide what the reminder means personally.
Obverse Design
A detailed skull is encircled by ornate floral scrollwork. The “MEMENTO MORI” inscription frames the composition and states its theme clearly. The flowing decoration contrasts with the stark anatomy of the central image.
Reverse Design
Intaglio Mint’s signature emblem appears with the weight and purity markings, identifying the round’s maker and silver content. The reverse provides a simple counterpart to the richly symbolic obverse.
