The Alamo 1 oz Silver Round
A San Antonio landmark with a history that reaches beyond the battlefield.
Our “Don’t Mess with Texas” series showcases some of the iconic things that make Texas so special. The fifth release features the Alamo, a place whose name has become inseparable from the history of Texas. This 39mm round contains one troy ounce of .999 fine silver and pairs the landmark with the shared longhorn-skull reverse.
From Mission to Military Post
The site’s story began in 1718 with the establishment of Mission San Antonio de Valero. Franciscan missionaries and Native American residents were part of its early history, long before the events that made it a battlefield. The former mission later served military purposes as San Antonio developed around it.
The Siege of 1836
Mexican forces under Antonio López de Santa Anna reached San Antonio on February 23, 1836, beginning the siege of the Alamo. The defenders included William Barret Travis, James Bowie and David Crockett, alongside many others whose names are less widely known.
On February 24, Travis wrote his appeal for assistance. The siege ended with the Mexican assault on March 6, after thirteen days. The battle became a defining event of the Texas Revolution, while the surviving site continued to change through later periods of military use, preservation and public remembrance.
The Alamo’s own historical interpretation emphasizes that its mission years and the lives of people beyond the best-known defenders are essential parts of the story. This tribute invites collectors to connect the familiar landmark with that longer history.
