Gonzales Cannon 1 oz Silver Round
A small cannon at the center of a turning point in Texas history.
Our “Don’t Mess with Texas” series showcases some of the iconic things that make Texas so special. The fourth release honors the Gonzales Cannon and the confrontation remembered through the words “Come and Take It.” This 39mm round contains one troy ounce of .999 fine silver.
The Dispute That Became a Battle
In September 1835, Mexican military authorities demanded the return of a cannon that had been supplied to the Gonzales settlement for its defense. The settlers refused to surrender it. What began as a dispute over an artillery piece became an armed confrontation on October 2, 1835, near the Guadalupe River.
The Texas Historical Commission identifies the Battle of Gonzales as the first battle of the Texas Revolution. Its comparison with the opening battle of the American Revolution gave Gonzales the nickname “Lexington of Texas.” The cannon became a lasting symbol of the confrontation, far outgrowing its original role as a piece of local defensive equipment.
Design Details
Obverse: A depiction of the Gonzales Cannon places the historic artillery piece at the center of the design.
Reverse: The shared series reverse features a longhorn skull with a star on its forehead. An oak branch appears to the right and an olive branch to the left, with “DON’T MESS WITH TEXAS” along the lower circumference and the hallmark below.
A Texas History Collectible
The design connects a single object with the larger events it came to represent. Alongside the wildlife and landmarks in the series, the Gonzales Cannon brings a distinctly historical subject to a collection of Texas themes.
