Armadillo 2 oz Silver Round
A little armored ambassador for the Lone Star State.
Our “Don’t Mess with Texas” series showcases some of the iconic things that make Texas so special. Its first release celebrates the armadillo, an unmistakable part of the state’s wildlife and character. Struck in two troy ounces of .999 fine silver, this 39mm round pairs the animal’s distinctive armored profile with the longhorn-skull reverse shared throughout the series.
Texas Wildlife with a Character All Its Own
The name armadillo comes from Spanish and means “little armored one,” a fitting description of the bony plates protecting its body. The nine-banded armadillo is Texas’s official small mammal, an honor designated in 1995 alongside the longhorn’s recognition as the state’s large mammal.
Under that rugged exterior is a busy digger. Armadillos excavate burrows for shelter and probe the soil for insects and other invertebrates. Their abandoned burrows can shelter other wildlife, making this familiar animal a small but useful architect of its surroundings.
Its family life is equally unusual: nine-banded armadillos normally produce four genetically identical young from a single fertilized egg. That remarkable trait adds another layer of interest to an animal already recognizable at a glance.
