The Buffalo nickel is one of the most recognizable designs in American coinage. This tribute brings its Native American portrait and powerful bison into a one-troy-ounce .999 fine silver round. The Design Behind the Tribute

Sculptor James Earle Fraser designed the original Buffalo, or Indian Head, nickel, which the United States Mint produced from 1913 through 1938. Its portrait and American bison offered a distinctly different character from the Liberty Head nickel it replaced.

The animal commonly called a buffalo in the coin’s name is an American bison. Fraser’s pairing of a Native American portrait with that imposing animal gave both sides of the coin a strong identity; collectors recognize the design from either face. In 1938, the Jefferson nickel succeeded it, closing a chapter that remains familiar well beyond numismatic circles.

Design Details

Obverse: A right-facing Native American portrait appears with “LIBERTY” near the upper-right rim and the date at lower left.

Reverse: An American bison dominates the design beneath “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” The inscription “ONE TROY OUNCE,” together with the mint mark and hallmark below, identifies this silver tribute’s weight.
