Bacchus and the Ancient World of Wine

Bacchus is the Roman name associated with the Greek god Dionysus, whose domain encompassed wine, fertility, and celebration. His imagery appears throughout ancient art: drinking vessels, trailing vines, ivy wreaths, and grape clusters helped viewers recognize him even without an inscription.

In Greek mythology, the wise but wine-loving Silenus served as the young god’s tutor and companion. Ancient artists explored both sides of the story, portraying a child under his guardian’s care as well as a mature deity surrounded by the abundance of the vine. Wine also had a public and ritual role: the Greek festival of the Anthesteria honored Dionysus over three days. These traditions give the round’s cheerful subject a connection to a much older world of art, storytelling, and seasonal celebration.

Obverse Design

A bearded Bacchus holds a goblet in his right hand and lifts a bunch of grapes in his left. An animal skin drapes over his shoulder, while a vineyard and curling vines fill the surrounding scene. The inscription BACCHUS identifies the central figure.

Reverse Design

Grapevines frame a wine glass and bottle around the inscription, “My only regret in life is that I did not drink more wine.” The design includes the name Ernest Hemingway beneath the saying. The silver weight and purity hallmark appears along the lower rim.
