A Portrait with a Mid-Century Story

The United States Mint announced its new Franklin half-dollar design in January 1948. Mint Director Nellie Tayloe Ross had championed the idea of honoring Franklin, and engraver John R. Sinnock gave the portrait its sculptural form. His work drew on several likenesses of Franklin and adapted a profile he had used for a 1933 Mint medal.

The announcement connected Franklin’s image with his reputation for thrift. The original coin paired his portrait with the Liberty Bell, creating a distinctly Philadelphia-centered combination of person and symbol. Here, the familiar profile is carried into a new 2025-dated bullion design, paired with the private mint’s emblem instead of the original coin’s bell.

That continuity makes the round appealing to collectors who appreciate how an engraved portrait can move between medals, circulating money and modern silver tributes. Its uncluttered composition gives Franklin’s face room to remain the focus.

Obverse Design

Franklin faces right, with “LIBERTY” arching above him and “IN GOD WE TRUST” along the lower edge. The date “2025” sits to the right of the portrait. Strong lines and restrained ornament recall the straightforward character of Sinnock’s historic design.

Reverse Design

Intaglio Mint’s stylized Ionic-column “T” occupies the center, with “INTAGLIO,” “MINT” and “EST. 2010” completing the emblem. A dotted border and rings of stars frame the composition. The inscriptions “ONE HALF TROY OUNCE” and “.999 FINE SILVER” state the round’s bullion content.
