The History Behind the Design
Charles E. Barber’s Liberty Head imagery became a familiar part of American change at the end of the nineteenth century. His related designs appeared on the dime, quarter and half dollar, giving those silver denominations a recognizable family resemblance. The Barber half dollar was issued from 1892 through 1915, before the Walking Liberty design arrived in 1916.
Its visual language belongs to the long tradition of representing liberty as an allegorical figure. The cap, wreath and carefully arranged inscriptions give the portrait a restrained, classical character. Rather than a scene full of movement, the design relies on the strong silhouette of Liberty’s profile and a balanced border of stars.
This modern tribute retains that recognizable character while carrying a 2025 date and a reverse that states its silver weight and purity. For collectors of American coinage art, it offers a way to compare Barber’s formal portraiture with the more animated designs that followed.
Obverse Design
Liberty faces right wearing a Phrygian cap and laurel wreath tied with a ribbon. “LIBERTY” appears on her headband, while “IN GOD WE TRUST” follows the upper rim. Thirteen six-pointed stars frame the portrait, seven at the left and six at the right. The date “2025” appears below.
Reverse Design
Intaglio Mint’s stylized Ionic-column “T” forms the center, accompanied by “INTAGLIO,” “MINT” and “EST. 2010.” Dotted and star borders surround the emblem. “ONE HALF TROY OUNCE” and “.999 FINE SILVER” identify the bullion content.
