Lioness & Buffalo – A Contest of Survival
A moment of raw determination becomes a miniature wildlife scene in this artist-original design from Intaglio Mint. A lioness and buffalo battle for their lives, bringing the tension between hunter and hunted to a 2 troy ounce .999 fine silver round. Issued as 2023 Mint Club® #3, this 39mm piece has a limited mintage of 500 and comes in a CoinSafe capsule.
The Natural World Behind the Design
Lions are unusually social cats, living in groups called prides. Lionesses often hunt together, and buffalo are among the large animals lions can take as prey. That relationship gives this encounter its force: the scene is about survival on both sides, with neither animal reduced to a passive background figure.
The design concentrates that struggle into a single composition. Instead of a formal portrait or a quiet landscape, it invites the viewer to consider movement, resistance and the split-second decisions of the wild. The brilliant uncirculated silver finish brings a different character to the scene as light passes across the relief.
Obverse Design
An original depiction of a lioness and buffalo locked in battle captures the central theme of the release. The close encounter gives this limited Mint Club issue a distinctly dramatic wildlife subject.
Reverse Design
A spread-winged eagle holds a flowing ribbon beneath a crown, set against a circular diamond-patterned field. Mint Club and Limited Mintage inscriptions surround the emblem, with the 500-piece mintage and “TWO TROY OUNCES .999 FINE SILVER” hallmark completing the design.
