Alien Skull – A Face from the Unknown
An elongated cranium. Oversized eye sockets. A narrow jaw lined with teeth. The Alien Skull takes the familiar shape of a skull and makes it unsettlingly unfamiliar, concentrating the entire design on a single forward-facing subject. Struck in 2 troy ounces of .999 fine silver, this 39 mm round is part of Intaglio Mint’s UFO Sightings & Alien Abduction Series.
The Imagination Behind the Image
The fascination with visitors from elsewhere has a real historical backdrop. During the twentieth century, reported UFO sightings prompted sustained public interest and official investigation. Project Blue Book, the U.S. Air Force’s longest-running program of that era, operated from 1952 to 1969; its records are now held by the National Archives.
The skull on this round is a work of speculative art, not a depiction of a documented discovery. Its appeal comes from the question it leaves open: what might an unfamiliar form of life look like? By stripping away the spacecraft and surrounding landscape, the design gives that question a stark, almost anatomical focus.
Design Details
Obverse: A large alien skull fills the field. Fine seams and irregular textures cross the broad upper cranium, while deep outlines around the eye sockets lead toward the nasal opening and compact toothed jaw. The open background keeps attention on the changing contours of the face.
Reverse: A large Intaglio Mint logo fills the center, enclosed by a plain border. “TWO TROY OUNCES” and “.999 FINE SILVER” identify the weight and purity, with stars separating the legends. The balanced reverse contrasts with the organic forms on the obverse.
