A Himalayan Legend Meets Modern Science

The Yeti, often called the Abominable Snowman in Western accounts, belongs to Himalayan folklore. Its image has also become entwined with the history of mountaineering. During the 1951 Everest reconnaissance expedition, unusual footprints in the Menlung Basin helped renew interest in the story; Eric Shipton’s photographs became enduring images of the supposed creature’s tracks.

More recently, researchers have investigated physical samples attributed to yetis. A 2017 study described by the University at Buffalo examined nine purported Yeti specimens from museums and private collections. Eight were identified as Asian bears and one as a dog. The research also contributed to knowledge of the region’s bears and their evolutionary relationships.

Those results identify the tested samples, rather than documenting a new ape-like species. The Yeti remains a subject of folklore and imagination, and that distinction is part of its appeal as an artistic theme. Here, the sharpened stick and mountain setting present the mint’s imagined creature as an active figure within a rugged landscape.
