The Kraken 1 oz Silver Round

Few sea legends capture a mariner’s fear of the unknown like the Kraken. Intaglio Mint turns that fear into a dramatic scene: a vast tentacled creature attacks a vessel while its crew struggles against the danger. Struck in 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver, this high-relief design brings a story of the deep into a 39 mm round.

Sea Legend and Deep-Ocean Discovery

The Kraken belongs to the storytelling tradition of enormous sea creatures capable of overwhelming ships. Its scale and destructive power make it a creature of legend, but real giant squid offer a fascinating parallel to the mystery that surrounds it.

Smithsonian researchers describe giant squid as elusive deep-water animals with eight arms and two much longer feeding tentacles. For a long time, much of the available knowledge came from specimens that washed ashore or were recovered by fishermen. Their remote habitat helped keep even these real animals out of sight.

In 2012, researchers filmed a giant squid in its natural habitat for the first time. That milestone highlights the difference between a ship-destroying monster story and the difficult work of observing life in the deep ocean. Both the legend and the discovery invite the same initial reaction: wonder at what lies beneath the surface.

Design Details

Obverse: A detailed, high-relief Kraken attacks a vessel, sending its sailors into panic. The encounter supplies the round’s sense of motion and scale, contrasting the creature’s power with the vulnerability of the ship and its crew.

Reverse: The Intaglio Mint logo rests on a radial burst with a textured background and stippled border. “ONE TROY OUNCE” appears above and “.999 FINE SILVER” below, flanked by stars.

The reeded edge and Brilliant Uncirculated finish complete this one-ounce edition. Its maritime subject pairs naturally with other silver rounds inspired by sea creatures, exploration and the enduring stories of the ocean.
