A Legend of the Pine Barrens

Often called the Leeds Devil, the creature appears in several versions of a story about Mother Leeds and her thirteenth child. In one familiar telling, the child transforms into a monstrous being and escapes into the surrounding wilderness. These are tales with many variations, not a documented account of a birth or a verified first sighting.

The New Jersey Historical Society records a particularly famous wave of reported encounters in January 1909. Claims of flapping wings and unusual tracks circulated through local newspapers, helping carry the legend beyond an isolated woodland story. Even the creature’s appearance changed from teller to teller.

The Pinelands Commission notes that portrayals often include horns, a forked tail and a mixed human-and-animal body. It also describes a gentler modern interpretation: the Jersey Devil as a protector of the Pinelands. That shift from feared apparition to regional symbol is part of what keeps the story alive.
