The Ahool 1 oz Silver Round
Wings spread across the design, the Ahool perches on a branch as though caught in the moment before flight. Intaglio Mint’s 1 troy ounce .999 fine silver round brings this elusive figure of cryptid lore into sharp focus, pairing a dramatic creature portrait with the mint’s high-relief logo reverse.
A Mystery from Java
The Ahool belongs to stories of a large flying creature associated with Java, Indonesia. Retellings describe it in different ways, often combining bat-like wings with a primate-like appearance. Those descriptions are elements of the legend, rather than a settled account of an identified animal.
One detail gives the story its memorable name: the call “a-hool.” In Mysterious Creatures: A Guide to Cryptozoology, George M. Eberhart records an account of Ernst Bartels hearing flapping wings and that distinctive call near Cijengkol, Java, in 1927. It is an intriguing episode in the literature of the legend, not proof of a new species.
The uncertainty is part of the design’s appeal. Instead of assigning the creature a scientific family or a precise wingspan, the round presents an artist’s interpretation of the mystery—a watchful, winged figure poised above the forest floor.
Design Details
Obverse: The Ahool sits on a branch with its wings extended. The spread-wing pose gives the composition its broad silhouette, while the perch creates a still moment in a story usually associated with movement and sound.
Reverse: The high-relief Intaglio Mint logo stands against a radial burst. A stippled border surrounds the center, with “ONE TROY OUNCE” above and “.999 FINE SILVER” below, flanked by stars.
A 39 mm diameter, reeded edge and Brilliant Uncirculated finish complete the piece. The Ahool offers collectors of legendary creatures a subject drawn from the flying mysteries of cryptozoological storytelling.
