Squonk 2 oz Silver Round

Some legendary creatures inspire fear; the Squonk is more likely to inspire sympathy. Intaglio Mint’s 2 troy ounce .999 fine silver round portrays this melancholy character alone in an empty field, capturing a quieter and more unusual corner of American tall-tale tradition.

The Creature That Escaped in Tears

William T. Cox included the Squonk in his 1910 book Fearsome Creatures of the Lumberwoods, With a Few Desert and Mountain Beasts. Illustrated by Coert Du Bois, with Latin classifications by George B. Sudworth, the book gives fantastic animals the outward trappings of a natural-history guide.

Cox places the Squonk in Pennsylvania’s hemlock forests and describes a shy creature distressed by its ill-fitting, blemished skin. Its constant weeping leaves a trail for hunters, yet its greatest weakness also provides an extraordinary escape: when frightened or cornered, it can dissolve into tears.

The entry ends with a wonderfully absurd capture near Mont Alto. A man lures a Squonk into a sack by imitating its cries, only to discover that his burden has suddenly grown lighter. His captive has vanished, leaving tears and bubbles behind. The mock classification Lacrimacorpus dissolvens fits the book’s playful scientific presentation; it is a fictional creature, not a recognized animal species.

Design Details

Obverse: A Squonk sits sobbing in the middle of an empty field. The isolated setting keeps attention on the creature’s sorrow and gives the round an emotional character quite different from a charging or threatening monster.

Reverse: A large Intaglio Mint logo appears within a plain border. “TWO TROY OUNCES” and “.999 FINE SILVER” are flanked by stars.

A reeded edge and Brilliant Uncirculated finish complete the 39 mm round. For collectors of unusual folklore subjects, the Squonk offers a small silver reminder of the humor and imagination found in old woodland stories.
