Pukwudgie 1 oz Silver Round
Small in stature and formidable in appearance, the Pukwudgie commands the center of this 1 troy ounce .999 fine silver round. Intaglio Mint portrays the woodland figure poised on a rocky outcrop, armed and holding fire—a dramatic interpretation of a character whose stories range from mischievous to menacing.
A Woodland Figure with Many Stories
Pukwudgie traditions belong to a wider family of stories about little people of the forest among Algonquian-speaking peoples. These are distinct storytelling traditions, rather than one uniform account. Native Languages of the Americas describes important differences: some Great Lakes stories portray comparatively good-natured tricksters, while southern New England accounts may give the figures a more dangerous character.
In some Wampanoag stories, Pukwudgies appear as opponents of the giant culture hero Moshup, also spelled Maushop. Accounts differ in their details and in the powers attributed to these elusive beings. That variety is part of the subject’s interest; no single height, list of powers or origin story represents every tradition.
Design Details
Obverse: The Pukwudgie stands on a rock outcropping, heavily armed and ready to hurl fire. The rocky setting grounds the scene, while the figure’s threatening pose gives this interpretation its force. The artwork emphasizes the dangerous side of the legend rather than attempting to illustrate every version of the story.
Reverse: A high-relief Intaglio Mint logo appears against a radial burst, enclosed by a stippled border. “ONE TROY OUNCE” and “.999 FINE SILVER” identify the silver content, with stars completing the design.
The 39 mm format brings the character and its rocky perch into a compact silver composition. A reeded edge and Brilliant Uncirculated finish complete this addition to a collection devoted to folklore and legendary creatures.
