Fiat Justitia Ruat Caelum 1 oz Silver Round

“Let justice be done though the heavens fall.” This uncompromising Latin motto gives an imposing subject to Intaglio Mint’s Latin Allure Series. In 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver, a crowned skeletal figure sits upon a throne with the familiar instruments of justice, turning an abstract principle into a striking image.

The Meaning Behind the Symbols

The phrase Fiat Justitia Ruat Caelum expresses the ideal that justice should prevail even when its consequences are daunting. Its dramatic language suits a design that asks the viewer to look beyond appearances and consider the weight of judgment.

The visual language has a long history. The United States Supreme Court’s curatorial account traces female representations of Justice to ancient figures such as Themis and Justicia. Over time, scales became associated with impartiality, while a sword represented power. Together, these objects unite careful consideration with the authority to act.

Even familiar symbols have changed in meaning. The Court notes that Justice’s blindfold could once suggest ignorance or tolerance of wrongdoing, although it is generally understood today as impartiality. Its own building includes both blindfolded figures and a Justice whose eyes are uncovered. Such variations show that artists have continually reinterpreted the ideal rather than followed one fixed image.

Design Details

Obverse: A crowned skeletal Lady Liberty sits on the throne of justice, her face partly shrouded and partly exposed. She holds a sword balancing the Scales of Justice. The design combines traditional judicial emblems with a stark reminder of mortality, giving the motto a solemn visual presence.

Reverse: A large Intaglio Mint logo is enclosed by a plain border bearing “ONE TROY OUNCE” and “.999 FINE SILVER,” flanked by stars.

The 39 mm round has a reeded edge and Brilliant Uncirculated finish. It offers collectors a distinctive interpretation of justice within the Latin Allure Series, with symbolism that rewards a closer look.
