Saint-Gaudens 1 oz Silver Round – High Relief Tribute
Liberty steps forward in a tribute to a landmark of American design.
Augustus Saint-Gaudens brought the eye of a sculptor to American coinage. This high-relief silver tribute celebrates his celebrated double eagle design, pairing a striding Liberty with an eagle in flight. One troy ounce of .999 fine silver presents those familiar motifs in a 30mm round.
Art Meets the Coining Press
President Theodore Roosevelt wanted American coins to reflect greater artistic ambition. His collaboration with Saint-Gaudens produced the 1907 twenty-dollar gold piece, known as the double eagle. Liberty’s forward movement and the sweep of the flying eagle gave the design an energy that continues to attract collectors.
The sculptor’s vision also tested the practical limits of coin production. Early versions used exceptionally high relief; adapting the design for everyday commerce required lowering that relief. The resulting double eagle remained in production through 1933. A century later, the United States Mint revisited the original artistic ambition in its 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle gold coin.
Design Details
Obverse: Liberty advances with a torch and olive branch, framed by rays and stars. The U.S. Capitol appears at lower left, with “LIBERTY” above.
Reverse: A left-facing eagle flies above a rising sun, with rays spreading behind it. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the tribute’s one-troy-ounce weight inscription occupy the upper portion.
A Silver Interpretation
The torch, olive branch and sunrise bring ideas of enlightenment, peace and renewal into the composition. This privately minted silver round honors that imagery in a high-relief format; it is a modern tribute to the historic gold design.
