1935 Texas Centennial Tribute – A State’s Story in Silver

An eagle, a lone star, the Alamo, and the figure of Victory bring several chapters of Texas history together on this tribute to the Texas Centennial half dollar. Struck in 2 troy ounces of .999 fine silver, the modern round gives collectors a substantial format in which to explore the historic design’s unusually rich imagery.

Remembering 1836

Texas declared independence from Mexico on March 2, 1836, when delegates at Washington-on-the-Brazos adopted the declaration. That event provides the historical foundation for the centennial commemoration. The Alamo belongs to the same revolutionary struggle, but the declaration itself was adopted at Washington-on-the-Brazos.

The United States Mint issued Texas Centennial half dollars from 1934 through 1938, with designs by sculptor Pompeo Coppini. The 1935 date associated with this tribute therefore sits within a commemorative series spanning several years around the 1936 anniversary. Coppini brought portraits, architecture, flags, and allegory together in a densely composed design that invites repeated inspection.

Design Details

Obverse: An eagle perches on a branch before the five-pointed star of Texas. The surrounding inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” The tribute’s “TWO TROY OUNCES” inscription identifies its silver weight.

Reverse: A kneeling, winged Victory holds an olive branch and rests a hand on the Alamo. Above her, a LIBERTY scroll appears before six flags. Portraits of Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin sit beneath her wingtips, while the centennial legend and “REMEMBER THE ALAMO” frame the composition.

This is a modern silver tribute to a historic commemorative design, offering both bold symbolism and smaller details for collectors who enjoy looking beyond the central image.
