1878 Morgan Dollar Tribute – 2 oz .999 Fine Silver Round
The first year of the Morgan dollar returns in a substantial silver tribute. This 39mm round contains 2 troy ounces of .999 fine silver, pairing Liberty’s familiar profile with the outstretched wings of the reverse eagle. The 1878 date recalls the beginning of a design that became closely associated with the American silver dollar.
The Beginning of the Morgan Dollar
Named for its designer, George T. Morgan, the original Morgan dollar was struck from 1878 through 1904 and returned for a final year in 1921. Its long production history connects the late nineteenth century with the years following World War I, when the Peace dollar succeeded it.
The inaugural date gives this tribute its focus. Rather than reproduce the original coin’s denomination at the bottom of the reverse, the round identifies its silver weight as TWO TROY OZ. It is a modern tribute to the historic dollar, with the design presented in a heavier .999 fine silver format.
Obverse: Liberty’s Distinctive Profile
Liberty faces left with flowing hair beneath a cap decorated with leaves and sheaves. A band bears the word LIBERTY, while E PLURIBUS UNUM follows the upper curve. Seven stars at the left and six at the right frame the portrait above the date 1878. Small tooth-like denticles complete the border, adding another layer of detail around the design.
Reverse: The Eagle and Wreath
An eagle spreads its wings above a wreath, holding a branch and three arrows. IN GOD WE TRUST appears in Gothic-style lettering over the eagle’s head. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the upper design, and TWO TROY OZ. curves below. A denticled border echoes the obverse and gives both sides a finished, balanced appearance.
