1794 Flowing Hair Dollar Tribute – 2 oz .999 Fine Silver Round
Liberty’s loose hair, fifteen stars and a small eagle recall the beginning of America’s silver-dollar coinage. This 1794 Flowing Hair Dollar Tribute presents that early design in 2 troy ounces of .999 fine silver, with a 39mm diameter and Brilliant Uncirculated finish.
America’s First Silver Dollar
The United States Mint was established in 1792, and its first silver dollars followed in 1794. Chief Engraver Robert Scot created the Flowing Hair design, placing a youthful Liberty on one side and an eagle within a wreath on the other. Just 1,758 dollars were delivered in that first year, making the 1794 issue an important landmark in American numismatics.
The fifteen stars give the design a particularly revealing detail: they represent the fifteen states in the Union at the time. Instead of a president or monarch, the portrait presents Liberty as an ideal of the young republic. This modern round preserves those historical features while identifying its own silver content through the reverse hallmark.
Obverse: Liberty and Fifteen Stars
Liberty faces right, with her hair flowing down her neck and behind her shoulder. LIBERTY appears above, and the date 1794 sits below. Eight stars to the left and seven to the right encircle the portrait, with a decorative border completing the composition.
Reverse: Eagle within a Wreath
An eagle with spread wings stands between two leafy branches tied together at their base. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the design, while the tribute’s hallmark appears near the branch stems. The open arrangement gives the small eagle and curved wreath a character distinct from the larger heraldic eagles of later American coinage.
