Intaglio Mint proudly presents Tengu, part of the Yokai: Legends of Japan Series, an exploration of the mysterious spirits, supernatural beings, and legendary figures that have inhabited Japanese folklore for centuries.
Among the most enduring figures in Japanese mythology, Tengu are supernatural beings traditionally associated with the country’s remote mountains and forests. Their appearance and reputation have evolved considerably over the centuries—from fearsome, birdlike creatures and disruptive spirits to powerful guardians possessing extraordinary knowledge and martial skill.
Early depictions of Tengu emphasized their avian characteristics, often portraying them with wings, beaks, and other birdlike features. Over time, one of their most recognizable forms emerged: a fierce humanlike figure distinguished by an extraordinarily long nose, piercing expression, red face, and the robes of a mountain ascetic. The long-nosed form became particularly associated with the powerful Daitengu, or greater Tengu.
Tengu legends are deeply connected with the mountains and the martial arts. Folklore frequently portrays them as formidable swordsmen possessing supernatural abilities, including extraordinary speed, flight, and mastery of combat. One famous tradition connects the Tengu of Mount Kurama with the legendary warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune, who was said to have learned exceptional swordsmanship from supernatural inhabitants of the mountain during his youth.
Yet, like many figures of Japanese folklore, the Tengu possesses a complicated nature. Stories have portrayed them as dangerous tricksters, punishers of arrogance, teachers, warriors, and protectors of sacred places. Their character changed through generations of storytelling, transforming them from creatures to be feared into figures that could also represent discipline, strength, and guardianship.
This combination of supernatural power, ancient mountain lore, martial tradition, and shifting identity makes Tengu a quintessential addition to the Yokai: Legends of Japan Series.
The obverse features Intaglio Mint’s interpretation of the legendary Tengu, immediately recognizable by his prominent elongated nose, stern expression, pointed ears, flowing beard, and traditional headpiece. Feathered elements behind the figure recall the Tengu’s ancient birdlike origins, while sweeping Japanese-inspired ornamentation frames the portrait.
The reverse carries the common Yokai: Legends of Japan design, featuring traditional Japanese imagery surrounding Mount Fuji and a torii gate, visually unifying each release within the series.
