Weinman’s Vision of Liberty
Introduced in 1916 to replace the Barber half dollar, Weinman’s Walking Liberty design appeared on United States half dollars through 1947. The sculptor also designed the Mercury dime introduced in the same year, bringing a distinctive artistic voice to two everyday American coins.
Rather than a stationary portrait, Weinman presented Liberty as a full-length figure moving into a new day. The laurel and oak branches she carries represent civic and military glory, while the rising sun gives the scene its sense of promise. This tribute carries the date 1941 as part of the reproduced design.
Obverse Design
Liberty walks left toward the sun with her right arm extended and branches gathered in her left. A star-covered flag billows behind her, and the folds of her gown follow the direction of her stride. “LIBERTY” surrounds the figure, “IN GOD WE TRUST” appears at the lower right, and 1941 is positioned beneath her feet.
Reverse Design
An eagle stands on a rocky crag with its wings raised. A pine branch grows beside it, balancing the bird’s broad wings and textured feathers. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” follows the upper border and “E PLURIBUS UNUM” appears at left. The tribute’s “TWO TROY OUNCES” inscription and silver hallmark identify its modern bullion format.
