Caveat Emptor – 1 AVDP Oz .999 Fine Copper Round | Veritas Numisma Series

Description

“Let the buyer beware” — a Latin warning closely associated with the common-law tradition. Caveat Emptor enters the Veritas Numisma Series in .999 fine copper, reinforcing the maxim’s earthy, foundational nature. It is a phrase born of trade, temptation, and consequence — a reminder that discernment is as valuable as any currency.

Struck in 1 AVDP ounce of .999 fine copper, this 39mm round showcases a richly detailed allegory on its obverse. Two skeletal figures — one cloaked and whispering, the other grinning beneath a wide-brimmed hat — exchange a heavy sack marked “$ SILVER” as a radiant bull stands uneasily between them. Bursting rays crown the scene, symbolizing false confidence and manufactured optimism, while the inscription CAVEAT EMPTOR grounds the design below. In copper, the imagery takes on a raw, almost industrial character — emphasizing the weight and permanence of the warning.

The reverse features the familiar hallmark of the Veritas Numisma Series: the robed skeletal philosopher holding a torch of illumination beneath the banner “Enduring Latin Maxims,” framed by the Veritas Numisma title. The warm copper surface enhances the depth and contrast of the intaglio-style engraving, giving the piece a distinctly classical presence.

The Maxim

Caveat Emptor is associated with the common-law principle that buyers should examine what they are purchasing. Its Latin wording does not establish an origin in ancient Roman marketplaces. This copper interpretation underscores the lesson’s timelessness, urging awareness not only in transactions, but in ideas, promises, and authority itself.
