A House with a Long History

Irish-born architect James Hoban won the competition to design the President’s House. John Adams became its first presidential occupant on November 1, 1800, beginning the building’s long life as both a residence and a place of government. The building’s survival was not assured. British forces burned it in August 1814 during the War of 1812, and Hoban returned to oversee its reconstruction. James Monroe moved into the rebuilt house in 1817. The famous exterior therefore carries a story of rebuilding as well as continuity, giving this imagined encounter a setting with a remarkable past of its own.
